Butera Chiropractic: Our Staff

Deborah Stevens

Deborah StevensDeborah Stevens has pursued a love of movement arts and music while finding innovative ways to integrate these disciplines. She began her study of violin at age four, the art of modern dance at nine and the art of figure skating at 12.

Deborah's training for figure skating competition led her to cross-train in the modality of Pilates. In 2002, an injury in figure skating training caused her to seek chiropractic care. Working with Dr. Rosanne Butera she was able to combine the modalities of Pilates training with chiropractic care , Deborah was able to recover from the injury and go on to capture the gold medal for the Ladies' Singles competition at the 2002 U.S. Adult Figure Skating Nationals.

Deborah began working with Dr. Butera as a Pilates trainer. The combination of the two modalities has proven very effective over the years and the integration keeps progressing. The patients' recovery time is dramatically reduced and they can return much sooner to their normal activities such as training for movement arts and sports. The person is given life-long tools to maintain an injury-free state and prevent further injuries while continuing to get stronger as well as increasing healthy posture and mind-body awareness.

In 2007 Deborah discovered the art of poi dancing. The history of poi dancing began in New Zealand several centuries ago by the Maori tribe. The art of poi involves spinning a small ball suspended from the back of the hand which is set on fire.

The Maori tribe incorporated the art of poi as a therapeutic activity to relieve soreness and tension in the hands, wrists, and forearms. The circular, fluid motions keep the ligaments and tendons of these delicate joints supple, flexible, and strong.

Deborah integrates the principles of poi with her Pilates therapy work as a means to prevent and treat problems such as carpel tunnel's syndrome. (Without the fire) Her personal goal is to compete at the U.S. Adult Figure Skating Nationals where she will skate an artistic program while spinning fire poi - a true meeting of fire and ice.
